How to use timer

Here, we will introduce how to use the timer of OpenTX/EdgeTX radio.
The same operation is possible with any radio that uses OpenTX / EdgeTX. However, keyswitch assignments / functions differ depending on model, and screen / menu configuration differs depending on installed version of OpenTX / EdgeTX.

Timer setting screen

OpenTX/EdgeTX radio has three timers for each model that can be started under various conditions. A common use is to count down the time throttle is operating to measure remaining flight time.
PC Three timers can be set for each model. When you open SETUP screen of the model, it looks like this.
One timer has such a setting item. Each setting value is explained below.
PC You can set color display / touch panel model in the same way.
Each timer has an independent setting screen. If you select the [Timer 1], [Timer 2], [Timer 3] buttons on SETUP screen , you will see a screen like this.

Trigger

In the field just to the right of where "Timer 1" is written, you can select a trigger (a condition to start timer). In color display / touch panel model, this part is divided into "Mode" column and "Switch" column.
Mode
choices meaning
OFFtimer is not used
ONkeeps counting all the time.
THs
(Throttle)
Activates timer while operating throttle (at a non-zero position). Returning the throttle to zero will also stop the timer. It is not affected by trim.
TH%
(Throttle %)
Operating speed of timer is changed according to throttle value. It counts in real time at full throttle and at half speed at 50% throttle.
THt
(Throttle Start)
Timer starts when throttle reaches a non-zero position and continues counting thereafter. It is not affected by trim.
StartWhen the trigger switch (table below) becomes valid, the timer starts and then continues counting (EdgeTX).
Switch
choices meaning
SA↑Activates timer when SA switch is in up / front position. Similarly, SB to SH switches can be specified.
SA-Activates timer when SA switch is in middle / center position. Similarly, SB to SH switches can be specified.
SA↓Activates timer when SA switch is in down / back position. Similarly, SB to SH switches can be specified.
tRlActivate timer when rudder trim switch is clicked to left.
tRrActivate timer when rudder trim switch is clicked to right.
tEdActivate timer when elevator trim switch is clicked down.
tEuActivate timer when elevator trim switch is clicked up.
tTdActivate timer when throttle trim switch is clicked down.
tTuActivate timer when throttle trim switch is clicked up.
tAlActivate timer when aileron trim switch is clicked to left.
tArActivate timer when aileron trim switch is clicked to right.
FM0 - FM8 Activate timer when flight mode FM0 - FM8 is enabled. This option does not appear unless the flight mode is set for this MODEL.
Tele Activates timer when telemetry data is being generated (when it is able to communicate with receiver).
ActActivates timer when operating physical input devices such as sticks, switches, buttons, trim switches, dials, etc.
  • Those with a "!" mark in front of the trigger name mean that the condition is reversed. For example, "!SA-" means "when SA switch is not in middle / center position (= up or down)".
  • "THs", "TH%", and "THt" can be triggered by switch, dial (Pot:Potentiometer) , or the value of another channel instead of throttle. This is specified in T-Source (Throttle Source) field of MODEL SETUP screen .

Count time

In the "00:00" field of of the "Start" column(EdgeTX), or to the right of the place labeled "Timer1"(OpenTX), specify timer count time (minutes: seconds). If you specify "00:00", the timer will count up when you trigger it. If you specify a value other than "00:00" (minutes, seconds), the timer will count down when triggered. During the countdown, if timer reaches 00:00, screen will blink and countdown will continue with a negative value.
With EdgeTX, if you specify something other than "00:00", you can select the option "Remain"/"Elaps". If you select "Remain", it will count down from the specified time. Select "Elaps" to count up from zero to the specified time.

Name

You can give the timer any name you like.

Persist. (Persistent)

Timer value can also count total value. You can specify that timer value be saved when switching models or when radio is turned off, and that saved value be restored when flying again with that model.
choices meaning
OffTimer value is reset when switching models or when radio is turned on.
FlightTimer value will last forever. You can reset by selecting "Reset flight" from the [Reset] menu on the main screen.
Manual resetTimer value will last forever. You can reset individual timers by selecting it (such as "Timer1") from the [Reset] menu on the main screen.

Minute (Minute Call)

If you check here, you will be notified by beep or voice (depending on the setting in the Countdown column below) every minute (every time 00 seconds have passed).

Countdown (Countdown notification method)

choices meaning
SilentNo notification is given until timer reaches zero. When it reaches zero, you will hear one beep.
BeepsA beep sounds 30, 20, 10 - 1 second before timer reaches zero. And when it reaches zero, you will hear one long beep.
VoiceSound is played when timer reaches zero, 30, 20, 10 - 1 second before it reaches zero.
HapticRadio vibrates when timer reaches zero, 30, 20, 10 - 1 second before it reaches zero.
